Johnson (Jack) Foye Munroe, Jr.

Savannah, GA - Jack Munroe, 82, died February 27, 2016 at his home surrounded by his wife and children and under the care of Hospice Savannah.

He was born December 13, 1933 in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended school in Japan where his father was working under General Douglas MacArthur helping to reorganize the Japanese civilian police force. He excelled in sports and lettered in football, baseball and basketball. Returning to the states he graduated from East Nashville High School in 1952 and entered the Air Force. His technical specialty was ground control approach. He served at 3 bases where he directed fighter jets and transport planes from flight line to tarmac as they landed.

Following his military service, Jack graduated from Tennessee Polytechnic University with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. At TPU, he captained the university’s golf team. After graduation, he began a long employment with the worldwide pharmaceutical firm of Burroughs, Wellcome Co.—now a part of GlaxoSmithKline. Jack began as a pharmaceutical sales representative and advanced up the corporate ladder from field supervisor to district sales manager to regional sales manager. Following an assignment as sales promotion and training manager, Jack became the company‘s national sales manager, He then served as VP of Organization and Development on the corporate board of directors for five years before retiring in 1995 after 35 consecutive years with the company.

Jack, and his wife, Diane moved to the Landings in Savannah in 1996 where he enjoyed his passion for golf. In 2007, hearing of needs for our young Military families, he spearheaded the formation of the Landings Military Family Relief Fund. He served as chair of this Fund until 2010. Jack was an ardent admirer of the Military and the Fund became his new passion. This dedication to the Military earned him designation as a Marne Rock Star, Honorary Ranger, Honorary Night Stalker, Honorary Member of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, Knight of the Honorary Order of St. Michael, and the Kiwanis Georgia District’s Hero Award.

Jack is survived by his wife, Diane, brother Tom of Marietta, GA; sons Jack III (Dena) of Raleigh, NC and Ned (Garry) of Brooklyn, NY; and daughter Cindy of Raleigh, NC. He leaves seven grandchildren: Daryl, Josh, Sarah, Evelyn, Daniel, Juliana and James.

We feel so very blessed to have met and grown to know Jack when we did. Jack brought to us an awareness of military family needs. After many meetings with him, "The Landings Military Family Relief Fund" began. Prior to that we crossed paths out at Hunter to welcome back or see off many soldiers -- roses -- flags -- hugs -- handshakes -- cheers. He called me a "good cheerleader" but Jack was a "Great Motivator". Our prayers are with you Diane and all of your family. Jack's legacy will live on in many people for many years.

- Carol and Bob Nickels, Savannah, Georgia

I was lucky enough to have known and worked with Jack at Burroughs Wellcome Co. My association with him was especially lucky during the merger of BW and Glaxo Inc., when my entire department was "going away." So I asked Jack, who was playing an integral part of the integration team, if the new organization needed the services of a humble, jack-of-all-trades writer/communicator. The very next day, I was called in by who was soon-to-be my new boss in Glaxo Wellcome's Corporate Affairs. Because of Jack, I had a wonderful, rewarding career, and I was able to retire early from "the company." My hat goes off to a great man, and my heart goes out to his family.

- Robert P Sutton, Chapel Hill, NC
